The challenge

MetService’s Weatherscape was an aging software utilized by broadcast corporations worldwide. Recognizing the need for modernization, MetService aimed to make the software more platform-agnostic, simplify its complexity and learning curve, and introduce new collaboration features.

Working closely with the MetService team in Wellington as well as our London office, this was a project that allowed for upskilling in a very unique area of storytelling and broadcast technology.

Embracing the familiar

The original Weatherscape platform was incredibly powerful in what it could produce from a broadcast perspective, and catered for a large amount of fine-tuning and customising in how the weather was presented.

This immense power was only overshadowed by its immense complexity, requiring you to wade through a sea of modal windows and less than intuitive UI elements in order to access the multitude of settings. Onboarding onto the platform often required a support person sitting next to you for the first few weeks.

When crafting the new user experience, we considered what kind of software the production team would already be familiar with, like Premier and After Effects. This allowed us to leverage patterns that required less onboarding.

End vision

Along with a full set of high-fidelity screens and intricate prototypes, we also delivered a video showcasing a range of proposed collaboration features and workflow improvements.
